Tribute to Mami and Papi

by Gene Fernandez

In the heart of our immigrant story lies the unwavering determination and sacrifices made by my beloved parents, Mami and Papi. Their journey from Havana, Cuba, to the bustling streets of New York City was one marked by resilience, adaptability, and an unyielding commitment to providing a better future for our family.

Mami, armed with just an eighth-grade education, exhibited a remarkable tenacity as she swiftly learned to read and write in English upon our arrival in the United States. Her history as a seamstress in a Havana bathing suit factory and her role in running our family’s bodega in the heart of Cuba’s capital demonstrated her enduring work ethic. Although she faced challenges with spoken English, Mami found ingenious ways to contribute to our family’s income. I can vividly recall the hum of her sewing machine echoing through our basement, where she painstakingly crafted dresses for a wholesale organization. Each piece she sewed from pre-cut fabric patterns delivered in bulk represented not just her skilled hands but also her unwavering love for her family.

Papi’s dedication mirrored Mami’s commitment to our family’s success. Armed with a tenth-grade education and a solid foundation in English language courses from his time in Havana, Papi navigated a maze of job opportunities in our new Bronx home. His dear friend, Julio, opened the door to Papi’s first job as a janitor and building maintenance worker in midtown Manhattan. Over time, Papi’s tireless efforts led him to the role of a building Superintendent, affectionately known as “the Super” by fellow New Yorkers. Yet, he never limited himself to a single endeavor. Papi worked multiple jobs simultaneously, often sacrificing precious hours of rest to ensure our family’s financial stability. His journey took him through the realm of yellow cabs during the 1970s, where he obtained a commercial driver’s license and navigated the city streets during the midnight shift. Through it all, Papi’s enduring spirit and work ethic illuminated the path to the American dream, ensuring that his three children had access to the countless opportunities that this land of promise offered.

As I reflect on my parents’ sacrifices and the indomitable spirit that carried them through each challenge, I am reminded that the immigrant journey is a testament to the unwavering pursuit of a better life and boundless love for family. Mami and Papi’s story is a source of inspiration—a reminder that, in the face of adversity, determination, and resilience, we can overcome any obstacle and build a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.

Brings back memories reading this, Papi had so many jobs. He would come home from one for a bite to eat say hi and off he was again. Glad you’re writing about it. Love you Gene. AKA my Big Brother.
